Open-Source 1Password, LastPass Alternative

One recommendation rather than a list — a 1Password, LastPass replacement you can run on your own server, and an honest account of what you give up.

Why people look for a 1Password, LastPass alternative

Commercial password managers are the single most security-sensitive subscription most people carry — the vault is the master key to everything else. 1Password has a strong record and is genuinely well built; LastPass, by contrast, has suffered repeated breaches serious enough that many security professionals have moved off it entirely. Either way, a subscription is not what makes a vault safe. The encryption is what makes it safe, and that encryption can sit on hardware you control.

The option worth looking at

Why this one

Vaultwarden is the clear answer. It implements the Bitwarden protocol, so you keep using the polished Bitwarden apps on every platform — browser extension, iOS, Android, desktop — while the encrypted vault lives on your own server. It runs comfortably on the smallest VPS you can rent, and the client apps remain free. The one thing you must not skip is a tested backup of the vault database, stored somewhere other than the server itself.

Before you migrate

Self-hosting means you are the one who gets paged when something breaks at 11pm. Before committing, be honest about three things:

Migrating your data

Nearly every 1Password, LastPass competitor listed above ships an import path — CSV, JSON, or a documented export format. The practical move is to migrate one project or one folder first, run both systems side by side for a week, and only then cut over. Export formats are rarely as clean as the marketing suggests, and it is much easier to notice a broken import on a test set than on five years of records.
