Self-Hosted Philips Hue Bridge, SmartThings Hub Alternatives
3 open-source replacements you can run on your own server — compared on what they are actually good at, not just what they claim.

Why people look for a Philips Hue Bridge, SmartThings Hub alternative
Hue bulbs are excellent hardware and the Bridge is the most polished smart-home hub on the market — that is not in dispute. The friction is the walled garden around it: automations run through Philips' cloud account, routines break when your internet does, and the ecosystem is deliberately built so that Hue accessories work best with other Hue accessories. SmartThings removed its own hardware hub, which moved the logic further into a cloud you do not control. The result is a house whose lights depend on someone else's uptime.
3 options, compared
Which one should you pick?
Zigbee2MQTT is the strongest answer if you want the devices you already own to keep working: it talks to Hue bulbs directly over Zigbee using a cheap USB coordinator, with no Hue Bridge and no cloud account involved, and automations then live in Home Assistant or openHAB on your own hardware. The trade is a coordinator stick to buy and a Zigbee mesh to learn — paired battery devices benefit from the Hue Bridge acting as a repeater, so plan the topology before you unplug it. zigbee-hass covers the same ground as a Home Assistant add-on if you would rather not run a separate service. openHAB is the choice if you are automating beyond lights and want one system to cover everything. Matter and Thread are slowly changing this picture, so if you are buying new hardware today, check what the device supports before committing to a coordinator generation.
Before you migrate
Self-hosting means you are the one who gets paged when something breaks at 11pm. Before committing, be honest about three things:
- Where will it run? A €4/month VPS handles most of these comfortably. A NAS or spare mini PC is even cheaper if you already own one.
- Who backs it up? A self-hosted service with no backup is worse than a cloud service, because at least the cloud service had someone else's redundancy. Set up automated backups before you migrate real data into it.
- How will you reach it remotely? Most people start with a WireGuard or Tailscale tunnel rather than exposing ports directly. That is the right instinct.
Migrating your data
Nearly every Philips Hue Bridge, SmartThings Hub competitor listed above ships an import path — CSV, JSON, or a documented export format. The practical move is to migrate one project or one folder first, run both systems side by side for a week, and only then cut over. Export formats are rarely as clean as the marketing suggests, and it is much easier to notice a broken import on a test set than on five years of records.
