Self-Hosted Budibase, Retool, Airtable Alternatives
4 replacements you can run on your own server — compared on what they are actually good at, not just what they claim.

Why people look for a Budibase, Retool, Airtable alternative
Retool and Budibase made it genuinely fast to build an internal tool — a small CRUD app over a database that would otherwise be a week of work — and Airtable did the same for spreadsheet-shaped data. The concern is what happens as the tool becomes load-bearing: Retool prices per user, which is painful for a tool many people need but few use heavily; Budibase's self-hosted tier is more generous but its cloud features pull you back to a subscription; and Airtable caps records and bases in ways you discover at the worst moment. The deeper issue is leverage — the app your team depends on ends up hosted by a company whose pricing you do not set.
4 options, compared
| Tool | License | Setup | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| NocoDB | AGPL-3.0 | Beginner | Teams that want Airtable-style views over their own database |
| ToolJet | AGPL-3.0 | Intermediate | Teams that need internal tools quickly without vendor lock-in |
| Appsmith | Apache-2.0 | Intermediate | Teams building internal dashboards and admin panels |
| Windmill | Apache-2.0 | Intermediate | Developers who want their existing scripts exposed as scheduled jobs and internal APIs |
Which one should you pick?
Appsmith is the most direct open-source counterpart to Retool: drag-and-drop UI over SQL, REST or GraphQL, with self-hosting, role-based access and no per-seat tax, and it is genuinely comparable for most internal-tool jobs. ToolJet is the closest competitor and a reasonable pick if its component library fits your use case better. NocoDB is the answer if what you actually want from Airtable is the spreadsheet-database experience — it reads and writes Airtable-style bases and can sit directly on a database you already run, removing the record ceiling. Windmill blurs the line between internal tool and automation and is worth a look if the app needs to trigger workflows as well as display data. For a small team, any of these replaces the paid tiers before the bill matters; the trade is that you now upgrade and back up the platform yourself.
Before you migrate
Self-hosting means you are the one who gets paged when something breaks at 11pm. Before committing, be honest about three things:
- Where will it run? A €4/month VPS handles most of these comfortably. A NAS or spare mini PC is even cheaper if you already own one.
- Who backs it up? A self-hosted service with no backup is worse than a cloud service, because at least the cloud service had someone else's redundancy. Set up automated backups before you migrate real data into it.
- How will you reach it remotely? Most people start with a WireGuard or Tailscale tunnel rather than exposing ports directly. That is the right instinct.
Migrating your data
Nearly every Budibase, Retool, Airtable competitor listed above ships an import path — CSV, JSON, or a documented export format. The practical move is to migrate one project or one folder first, run both systems side by side for a week, and only then cut over. Export formats are rarely as clean as the marketing suggests, and it is much easier to notice a broken import on a test set than on five years of records.
