Self-Hosted Datadog Logs, Splunk, Papertrail Alternatives
2 replacements you can run on your own server — compared on what they are actually good at, not just what they claim.

Why people look for a Datadog Logs, Splunk, Papertrail alternative
Splunk and Datadog are exceptional log platforms, and their pricing reflects it: both charge by volume, which means the cost of your logs scales with how much your systems talk, not with how much you value them. Papertrail is the light end of the same model — simple and cheap until it is not. The pattern that catches people is a runaway service or an increased log level producing a bill that arrives days after the cause. For logs specifically, the volume is often the whole reason the SaaS bill is uncomfortable.
2 options, compared
| Tool | License | Setup | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Grafana Loki | AGPL-3.0 | Advanced | Centralising logs without an Elasticsearch-sized budget |
| Dozzle | MIT | Beginner | Watching container logs without leaving the browser |
Which one should you pick?
Grafana Loki is the standard self-hosted answer and the one that changes the economics: it indexes only the labels attached to each log stream rather than the full text, which cuts storage and CPU dramatically and makes it cheap to run beside Grafana. The trade is real — you lose cheap arbitrary full-text search across all history, so if your use case is security investigation over months of logs, Elasticsearch or Splunk remains the correct tool and self-hosting either is legitimate. Dozzle covers a different and often sufficient need: it is a live, read-only log viewer for containers with no storage layer at all, which handles the everyday "what is this service printing right now" without you running a log pipeline at all. Many small setups end up with Dozzle for watching and Loki for keeping.
Before you migrate
Self-hosting means you are the one who gets paged when something breaks at 11pm. Before committing, be honest about three things:
- Where will it run? A €4/month VPS handles most of these comfortably. A NAS or spare mini PC is even cheaper if you already own one.
- Who backs it up? A self-hosted service with no backup is worse than a cloud service, because at least the cloud service had someone else's redundancy. Set up automated backups before you migrate real data into it.
- How will you reach it remotely? Most people start with a WireGuard or Tailscale tunnel rather than exposing ports directly. That is the right instinct.
Migrating your data
Nearly every Datadog Logs, Splunk, Papertrail competitor listed above ships an import path — CSV, JSON, or a documented export format. The practical move is to migrate one project or one folder first, run both systems side by side for a week, and only then cut over. Export formats are rarely as clean as the marketing suggests, and it is much easier to notice a broken import on a test set than on five years of records.
