Self-Hosted Notion Alternatives

3 open-source replacements you can run on your own server — compared on what they are actually good at, not just what they claim.

Why people look for a Notion alternative

Notion is remarkable at what it does — databases, docs and wikis in one place. The concerns are structural: your workspace sits on their infrastructure, offline mode is limited, and export has never produced a clean round-trip. If the wiki outlives your willingness to pay, migrating out is unpleasant.

3 options, compared

Which one should you pick?

SiYuan is the closest in spirit to Notion with local-first storage and block references. Trilium Notes suits people who want a hierarchical knowledge base they fully own. NocoDB is the right call if what you really want from Notion is the database view, not the documents.

Before you migrate

Self-hosting means you are the one who gets paged when something breaks at 11pm. Before committing, be honest about three things:

Migrating your data

Nearly every Notion competitor listed above ships an import path — CSV, JSON, or a documented export format. The practical move is to migrate one project or one folder first, run both systems side by side for a week, and only then cut over. Export formats are rarely as clean as the marketing suggests, and it is much easier to notice a broken import on a test set than on five years of records.
