Self-Hosted Adobe Lightroom, Apple Photos, Google Photos Alternatives
2 replacements you can run on your own server — compared on what they are actually good at, not just what they claim.

Why people look for a Adobe Lightroom, Apple Photos, Google Photos alternative
Google Photos and Apple Photos are extremely good at the hard part — automatic organisation, search, and reliably getting every photo off your phone — and that convenience is why almost everyone uses them. The costs are the ones you only notice at scale: Google Photos stopped offering unlimited free storage, iCloud storage is priced per tier and grows with your library forever, and in both cases your library is a set of derived files inside an account you do not control. Lightroom is a different proposition: it is a professional editing tool rather than a library, and its subscription model means the app stops working if you stop paying, even for photos you already imported.
2 options, compared
| Tool | License | Setup | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Immich | AGPL-3.0 | Intermediate | Anyone leaving Google Photos who wants their memories on their own disk |
| PhotoPrism | AGPL-3.0 | Intermediate | People with large existing photo archives to organize |
Which one should you pick?
Immich is the closest match to how people actually want to use a photo service today: mobile apps that back up in the background, face and object recognition, a map view, and shared albums, all against storage you own. It is under very active development, which is both its strength and its caveat — features land quickly, so check the current release notes before you move a decade of photos onto it, and keep your originals somewhere else regardless. PhotoPrism sits on the other side of the trade: a more mature codebase with stronger automatic classification and search, at the cost of the polished phone-app sync experience that makes Immich feel like a drop-in replacement. Either way, the rule from every other page applies most sharply here: photos are irreplaceable, so a tested backup of the library matters more than which tool stores it.
Before you migrate
Self-hosting means you are the one who gets paged when something breaks at 11pm. Before committing, be honest about three things:
- Where will it run? A €4/month VPS handles most of these comfortably. A NAS or spare mini PC is even cheaper if you already own one.
- Who backs it up? A self-hosted service with no backup is worse than a cloud service, because at least the cloud service had someone else's redundancy. Set up automated backups before you migrate real data into it.
- How will you reach it remotely? Most people start with a WireGuard or Tailscale tunnel rather than exposing ports directly. That is the right instinct.
Migrating your data
Nearly every Adobe Lightroom, Apple Photos, Google Photos competitor listed above ships an import path — CSV, JSON, or a documented export format. The practical move is to migrate one project or one folder first, run both systems side by side for a week, and only then cut over. Export formats are rarely as clean as the marketing suggests, and it is much easier to notice a broken import on a test set than on five years of records.
